The ache for home lies in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned. -Maya Angelou When my wife and I were just starting out in 2008 we considered where to live for the best possible jobs and most reputable school for raising our future kids. At the time we both were looking for a home to buy, but were very jaded by the experience of her parents. They had a beautiful large home in Maine, where my wife had grown up her whole life. A year before our wedding they found out the cost of the mortgage was going up significantly and in that same time went into foreclosure proceedings. It was then that the four of us, my in-laws, my wife and I decided to move together to another state and start over. I can remember clearly packing up that warm, welcoming home into a moving truck and waving farewell to a place full of fond memories. When we arrived in Arizona we thought we d never find another home to buy. The housing market hadn t settled yet and the cost to purchase was astronomical. It wasn t until my father-in-law came across a rent-to-own situation that we finally felt we could have a great home again. My wife and I decided we wanted her parents to live with us in a separate part of the house and we soon moved into a gorgeous 5 bedroom house with an adjacent apartment. Now, years later, my two kids are surrounded by the love they receive from my wife and I, plus the generosity and affection of their grandparents.
